FedGPT Reads 10 Million Words in 6 Months to Build NDHU’s AI Assistant

NDHU partnered with Yating Intelligence to launch NDHU-GPT, a customized AI assistant built on FedGPT to improve admin efficiency and student services.

Unlike traditional rule-based bots, NDHU-GPT uses AutoKB, combining a large language model with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). It processes school documents and responds in natural language, requiring no preset commands.

Yating conducted interviews to identify pain points, then tested the system with over 5,000 internal documents and FAQs to train and validate accuracy. Comprehensive training ensured staff adoption, while ongoing feedback and updates keep the system relevant. NDHU-GPT is now a reliable, everyday tool for both staff and students.

This collaboration shows the power of AI in education and the value of co-developing flexible, real-world solutions.

Benefits & Results

The results of implementing NDHU-GPT have been remarkable. The system has significantly reduced the dependence on administrative personnel and drastically improved the university’s operational efficiency. With its highly automated smart Q&A capabilities, the AI assistant quickly handles repetitive inquiries, streamlining information retrieval and administrative workflows while saving both time and manpower.

For example, questions about National Health Insurance (NHI) applications—a common concern for international students—used to require nearly one hour of patient explanation by administrative staff or faculty due to language barriers and complex regulations. With around 1,000 international students asking about this process each year, the workload was significant. After implementing NDHU-GPT, the NHI-related inquiries alone save approximately 1,000 hours per semester, equivalent to 125 working days. This not only improves administrative efficiency but also reduces student wait times and enhances overall satisfaction with campus services.

Administrative staff, in turn, can redirect their efforts toward strategic tasks and personalized student services, resulting in more effective resource allocation.

FedGPT’s success in the education sector demonstrates its stability and real-world value, making it not only an ideal solution for digital campus transformation and smart service upgrades but also a vital partner for educational institutions striving for efficient management and innovative services.
